Skies transported me to the back country of the big island and its people, the Hawaii we never see, all from the perspective of a young woman determined not to be there. Like other Geez novels I've read, the characters are so vivid as to become real. Now they are people I know, people I care about, people whose foibles frustrate me even while I cheer their victories and mourn their losses. Rochelle is a young lady of privilege I tried not to like, but couldn't help caring about. She desperately needs to feel like she belongs somewhere, but just can't see what the very notion of belonging truly means. Her stepbrother Poco, best friend Hawaii-transplant Mikalu, and the youngsters Dabu and Mauterre mean more to her than she understands at first. This is the heart of a story that is both mystery about her mother's death and thriller. Rochelle and the people she loves are in more danger than they ever imagined. I can see considerable appeal for people who appreciate literary multi-cultural romance, as well. Geez is a master of metaphor, presenting the way Rochelle imagines and interprets her world (as in his What Sara Saw or Dance of the Lights). In this novel he so immerses us in the culture of Hawaii we welcome the opportunity to learn snatches of pidgin along with Rochelle and Mauterre. Geez makes this world real for us in ways that help us understand the people sharing it with this outsider "haole." This is a novel I'll reread. Sure, now I know the story, but I'll want to go back and visit these people again; and the wondrous place they inhabit is a great place to hang out.Product details

“Papala Skies” is an amazingly well told story about a young girl, Rochelle. She loses her mother at thirteen years old. She is whisked off to Hawaii and welcomed into a Hawaiian family and their traditions, but decides she wants to go back home to go to school and then college-- with her father’s blessings. She grows into a capable young woman in Chicago, but keeps finding herself being drawn back to Hawaii. There is love, intrigue, and adventure along with a very detailed glimpse into the Hawaiian culture. The characters are strong and draw you into the narrative that is even stronger with several layers. I was invested in this tale. I recommend it to all who want to learn more about, not only Hawaiian legends, but about the strength of a young woman.
As Author Stephen Geez wrote so eloquently Papala Skies is the story of a young woman who makes all the right choices, only to find herself living an unexpected life. I can relate to Rochelle DuFortier (the heroine) need to belong, and to seek one's version of truth amidst different cultures. Although I did not grow up in Hawaii but now found myself living on Maui, I can colligate with Rochelle yearning for a sense of place, but having to confront to new ways. With me it's within a European culture that was vastly different from my Malaysian upbringing. This was a soul searching book for me and I'm grateful for Mr. Geez for writing it.
I've always wanted to visit Hawaii and I must say this book was like having a personalized grand tour. The descriptions were vivid and conjured up outstanding imagery that virtually took you there, the prose as refreshing as a frozen pina colada on a hot afternoon. Don't let the somewhat enigmatic title and cover fool you. This story was beautifully rendered as implied, but it comprises far more than lush tropical, scenery.
This complex and compelling story is as unique as its setting. While it has numerous elements of a coming of age story and dealing with tragedy, it went much deeper and at times much darker. The main character, Rochelle, has a troubling secret which she's carried since she was thirteen when her mother died. She blames herself for her mother's death, something children are prone to do whether justified or not when there's a divorce, illness or other trouble that descends upon a family. While some teens might turn to drugs or alcohol, Rochelle instead becomes an over-achiever.
Far more is confronted in this brilliant novel than the challenge of overcoming the death of a loved one, the complexities of family loyalty, or friendships stronger than blood ties. There is a well-sustained sense of mystery throughout as Rochelle's life unfolds amid an initially alien culture of which she gradually becomes a part, driving choices which eventually deliver her to the last place she expected to be. Not only are the characters real but their lives and interactions as well. The level of detail makes you feel as if you know these individuals personally. You cry when they pass on and and will miss the others as you would a close friend when the story ends.
This story was chock full of themes, subplots, human nature and complicated relationships that bordered on being epic or perhaps one huge chunk of a family saga. The ending was satisfying enough to serve as a conclusion but there's a tremendous amount of material begging for prequels and delving into the backgrounds of the different characters. I highly recommend this story as a great read to anyone looking for an intriguing, well-written story that will undoubtedly take you places you've never been before, even if you've been to Hawaii.
